I think I experienced my first visit of one last night - not sure if it coincides with having to have my old horse put to sleep Monday morning or not but it seems a bit of a coincidence - I was visited by a largish dog - almost greyhound like but with finer features, it woke me by pawing my knee as I laid in bed and looked directly at me and returned my gaze for probably up to a minute, it didnt feel like a dream, it felt real, so real in fact I told it to go lay down as I thought it was one of my dogs but it definitely wasnt, as my smooth coated dog was actually laying on the floor near where it was sitting.
It didnt feel uncomfortable or spooky, comforting in a way, but I have no idea if I should have done anything! When I had to have my two old dogs pts earlier in the year they visited me and ran off towards meadows, as though they were telling me they were OK but this was entirely different, Ive not owned a dog that looked like this but somehow it seemed familiar
any ideas/help please?!

talk to it. Ask it who/what it is and why its there for you.
If you're not sure how to get it back, try asking for it to come before you go to sleep and asking the questions then too.
You might find it visits you again and you might get some answers

thanks I'll give that a try, I think I was so astonished I just laid there and stared!
I know I have a spirit guide in human form but this is the first time Ive experienced a visit from an animal.

You are honoured indeed, an animal spirit is often hard to see, but once seen its a truly magical moment, you must have a kind loving soul and are indeed blessed

It was a truly uplifting and wonderful experience, I think what struck me most was he woke me so I could see him, and the peace and happiness I felt at the time.
I've only seen him for fleeting moments since but have felt him around quite a lot, always a calming and happy feeling.
