Full Version: Trad Paths
UK Pagan, The Valley > The Circle (all pagans together) > Pagan Paths

Wolvie and I were having a chat the other week about trad paths. I mentioned Gwyddon and he brought up Brython (is that right?) and Cornish craft. I was wondering if anyone belongs to any of these trads and what others exist out there? (plugging Wolvie's forum here tongue.gif)

I'm interested in how widely followed these are and how they cope/integrate with more modern Pagan sects - if at all. Gwyddon especially interests me as the language is so intertwined too - same for Cornish?

Best wishes,

Marion.

Thinair, I did some research myself a while back on Gwyddon, the group you have linked to on the tylwythteg site, appear to be an incarnation of an older group. There apeared to be some form of acrimony based around it's formation on the part of the older group members (lol like that ain't unusual with the trad crafters), which seemed to infer that perhaps the group didn't have the provenance it claims (again what's new).

However I have had the pleasure of speaking to practitioners of both flavours, both in real life and via the web, both seem equally as dedicated and genuine in thier craft. So with much in this tangled web we call life, approach with caution, assess with dispassion, take what works and ignore the rest hahahahaha. No seriously, I can see it being no worse or better than any of the other groups who claim a trad path, and I agree with you, it is incredibly interesting because of the language and mythology it uses.

Depends which Gwyddon you mean, of course.

Most people don't consider that the Twitchy Twig version are anything other than a modern invention.

There's another Gwyddon though (who do have some members in Cardiff, IIRC): I've seen their material (it was online for a little while but got pulled because they were being plagiarised by the American lot) and it didn't ring my bullshit detector, it looked genuine to me.

The only member I ever met was Ioan Einion who sadly died a couple of years ago but I'm sure that the rest of the group are still in existence.

Ermn, is 'raven' a traditional Gaelic word? wink.gif Lol, sorry, I’m an awful cynic, I really must lose that. It would be interesting to know more and whether they work in Gaelic. Does Eblanna mean it's related to Southern Ireland/Dublin? What's the reference/meaning?

Best wishes,

Marion.

You hit the nail on the head there. The family name comes from the Wicklow mountains and the Raven refers to the family lineage. O Byrne - O Broin - Decendant of Bran/Raven. I share the last name with them but we are different families.

I can understand why they use the english. With the O Broin Septs traditional first ancestor/Teutilary Goddess being associated with ravens it could possibly show a link to the Morrigan. A possibility the O Broin are fairly proud of hehe.

Okay, this is my first proper post, so bear with me if I'm a little overzealous, not to mention very late. I don't get on line often & have only just caught this thread blush.gif blush.gif

Ffred mentioned that some of Ioan's "descendants" may still be about. I'm very happy to confirm he's right. biggrin.gif Not only are we still about, but some of us are in Cardiff. Hedgerose is also part of my cylch.

I've read as much of the Twisted Twig site as I could stomach o_loony.gif It bears very little relationship to the Gwyddon I know & love. It seems to me to be a very diluted not to mention fluffy American take on a Peculiarly Welsh Path. For the sake of all that is sacred, they can't even get the Welsh spellings right. I've asked some questions & there seems to be a suspicion that parts were obtained from an accurate source & the rest made up from whatever seemed likely & available.

There's not much more I can say here. Oaths prevent!

I'm delighted to hear this. Though I'm a resolute solitary, if I was drawn to any tradition, it would certainly have been the Gwyddon, they are the only Traditional group that have the ring of truth about them to me.

Long may you flourish.

Strange....... I've been a member of the Gwyddon since 1989 and was a coffin bearer at Ioan's funeral as he was also my best friend .... but I have never heard of either of the people mentioned on this thread who claim to be members of the Gwyddon, neither do the Gwyddon have any record of any remaining initiates in Cardiff (although 2 in Pontypridd), how odd!

This is not the place for a discussion of lineage. People move around & new inititates come to the path. Any records kept are bound to be out of date.

They're actually very up to date. Ioan made sure of this before he passed away.

However, I agree with the above statement and have PM'd you.

Hi...

was searching through the site (am new) and saw this one. Good to meet another Gwyddon.

There're more of us out there than I thought!
