A couple of nights ago I had quite a vivid dream where I was in some village square during what seemed like a mayday celebrations. At this they had a pig that was still very young and was covered in very soft shiny fur and was very cute and I was playing with it. They told me that it was a special pig that they would look after and treat really really well, then before the celebration they would slaughter it and eat it at the feast.

I was wondering if anyone knew of some kind of traditions where they do this? I mean have an animal that is given the best possible treatment then ritually slaughterd and eaten as part of a ceremony? It seems like the sort of thing that could happen, or maby my brain is just coming up with new traditions unsure.gif
Pomona
It's the kind of thing which happened in the ancient world, certainly the Greeks and Romans sacrified animals as part of their rites and the animal would have been treated well as befits an offering to the Gods.

It is done here around SW Germany, mostly at that time, though now independently named Spawnpig Fest. Of course the maypole was usually raised in the village square on this event, all part of the Spring fertility rites.
