Are there such things or the equivelant of these?

The pagan songs i have seen written are a bit "twee" and "airy fairy"...
Quasizoid
Well, actually its called magickal verse, as is famous of such bards as Taliesin. One has to beware though, as some of these were crudely "Christianized" over the course of Holy Roman inquisition. Quite frankly, you can compose your own verse, as it is often said the gods and goddesses favour originality rather than complacent ritual. smile.gif
Paganboy28
Tried making my own music (no not that kind you rude people!!) but its words i have difficulty with...

What music inspires you then?
Quasizoid
If you can't sing PB, you can chant or hum, just as well play an instrument without singing. It is not so much the words as it is the feelings you wish to convey. It is natural that we each have our different ways of conveying them. However, I wouldn't suggest communion with any spirit by means of a tuba, not to mention the kind of attention it would attract! laugh.gif
Paganboy28
Whats wrong with a tuba!?!? Umpa pa umpa pa. Sounds pagan ritually to me. laugh.gif

I like the native american flute sounds and drums, but 1 drum on its own can be a bit dull and i have no idea how to play a flute and they seem expensive!

I was in the choir at school and at uni....

its knowing what to sing and say thats the problem.

First song i knew all the words to is 'I vow to thee my country'..its a hymn but its a pagan as you can get.
My ol mum says i knew all the words even afor i could read them. Its still my favorite. smile.gif
Its the song of the land.

I vow to thee, my country—all earthly things above—
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love;
The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

And there’s another country, I’ve heard of long ago—
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.

Regretfully, I cannot agree, probably because I know what the verses mean. Try:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Vow_to_Thee,_My_Country

to me it's completely Christian, which is how it was written. sad.gif

And ye can suck 'em out through the specially designed mouthpiece too!

Oh I'm sure you could get much the same volume per cubic centilitre with a French Horn, rather than having to schlep a Tuba around. biggrin.gif

I used to have a little drum which I really enjoyed (don't do words) really put me in touch with the bit of the world we often ignore (hmm ... spirit world maybe?)

Really liked clannad. I also like Rammstein, Queen, and relaxing music.

Hymn to Her - The Pretenders
arctic wolf

You wanted a pagan mymn..... try this one....

Not Jerusalem.

And did the Aes in ancient times,
Walk upon England’s mountains green?
And did Goddesses, Gods and man,
In England’s pleasant pastures meet?
And did the lords of Vanirhiem,
Hunt in the forests dales and downs?
And were there many sacred oaks and yews,
Before the Christians cut them down?

Bring me my rune carved staff of thorn!
Bring me my athame of desire!
Bring me my mead filled drinking horn!
Bring me my Water! Earth! Air! Fire!
I shall not cease from risting runes,
Nor shall my wand sleep in my hand,
Till we have built a Pagan place
In England’s green and pleasant land

I play a tenor horn (which for those of you who don't know is like a veeeery small tuba). Is that what I'm doing wrong? Could this be why I am surrounded by beer-swilling, burping, farting louts? Or maybe that's just the other players... rolleyes.gif

There was a prog on't telly ages ago about Iceland where the population seem to be more in tune with "elves" than most people, and although they're nominally Lutheran, aparrently many of their hymns feature elves and otherworld spirits. Since I don't speak Iclandic I wasn't able to verify that on the prog, but it would be interesting to find out.

Hym To Her

Let me inside you, into your room,
I've heard its lined with the things you don't show,
Lay me beside you, down on the floor,
I've been your lover, from the womb to the tomb
I dress as your daughter, when the moon becomes round
You'll be my mother, when everythings gone,

And she will always carry on,
Something is lost, something is found,
We will keep on speaking her name
Some things change, some stay the same.

Keep whispering to me, from behind that closed door,
The maid and the mother and the crone who's grown old,
I hear your voice, coming out of that hole,
I listen to you and I want some more,
I listen to you and I want some more.

And she will always carry on,
Something is lost, something is found,
We will keep on speaking her name,
Some things change, some stay the same.

There's an insane Tas-like response on another thread about the amount of drams a tuba can hold!
Twas between meself & Quasi (surpise, surpise) and despite the rathe "lateral" train of thought, Tas raises a glass to ye re this!
Good on ye mate!
I plat bodhran. Infrequently, due to "needs must" current lifestyle. Plus a depleting relationship with a tad insecure (?) partner who really should NOT be that way inclined.
Basically, if it rings yer chimes, GO FER IT MATE!

In a a recentish survey over 60% of Icelanders said that they believe in elves (must try and dig out the reference) - alfer or huldufolk (the hidden people). Alfer are spirits who often inhabit trees, rocks, water etc. but can be attached to houses as well. Iceland was the the latest country in Europe to be christianised, and while I'm certainly not claiming any unbroken Heathen tradition, elements of the old beliefs continued and sat alongside christianity. Even today, if rocks need to be moved to build a new road the wights have to be appeased first. My grandmother, who would certainly have described herself as Christian (methodist in the UK) would regularly put out offerings for the house elf (usually beer or sherry, sometimes milk and biscuits or cakes - that particular house elf had a very sweet tooth!).

I seem to recall that hymns as such didn't arrive in Iceland until C16 and I can well believe that they'd feature elves. Hmmmm will see if I can dig anything out over the next few days.

The same prog mentioned that a recent new motorway had to be resurveyed because the elves didn't like the route. It was going to go right through a barrow until the authorities changed it. How cool is that?
