Full Version: Whats In A Name?

How many people out there think that names are important? I mean, reading Buckland's Complete Guide to Witchcraft (not that i follow Seax Wicca) but he puts lots of emphasis on finding your "real" name.

Do we all have "real" names?
How do you find out what it is if they exist?
What significance is this?
Quasizoid
Well, the spirits told me that names are nowhere near as important as knowing who you are. I'm inclined to agree with them on this, just as each of us may have our own point of view. biggrin.gif

I wouldn't pay much attention to Buckland if I were you.

Hey - no one's a complete twat if they can persuade people to part with money for the complete twaddle they've made up. wink.gif

Other things, maybe, but not a twat. Not unless he actually believed the stuff, knowing he'd made it up...tongue.gif

To paraphrase the Bard -
'A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.'

It is not the name that makes the object, but the essance, spirit, knowing that does it for me.

Be bright, be bold

Please o_thwak.gif refrain from criticising Mr Buckland in public, I like his works, they're great, they're fantastic, they're wonderful (OK maybe they're crap) but they sell well biggrin.gif

Ignoring Buckland (which I find quite easy to do biggrin.gif ) there are a lot of beliefs centred around knowing the "true" name of a god - it's believed that if you know the "real" name, then you have control and command over the god. The story of the Egyptian God Ra, who is forced to reveal his true name to Isis, in order that she can heal him from the serpent's bite which is sucking the strength from him. The Jews don't write the word "God", substituting the "o" with a dash "_", and they don't say the word either. I've heard of other stories about the "real" names of gods being concealed for various reasons. And I have read in various, admittedly "how to be a Pagan" books, that seeking out your own "real" name is something to be done in the same way that seeking your "totem" is to be ticked off the list.

I personally don't think it's necessary. If you speak to the Gods I think they know you by whatever name you call yourself and whatever name your "real" name might be. I don't think you would gain any greater insight to yourself or any hidden esoteric knowledge.

Beautifully put!

If people feel the need to have a special, magical name, its probably not going to hurt.

I'll be the first to admit that I like a lil ritual in my workings, but a change of name was never something I felt I needed.

Oh gods, the song in my heart has just changed to ...

'I am what I am!
I am what I am
And what I am needs no excuses'.

I'm going to ie down now til the Shirley Bassey moment passes.
