I have a set of tarot cards given to me by a spritualist who told my mother that I was very spritual! I have tinkered with them, but to be honest don't really know what to do with them. The book that accompanied them said to ask them specific questions. I can't think of anything to ask!

The thing is they won't leave me alone and obviously want me to use them. They keep calling to me. I have a really strong urge to use them but don't know what to do. I know I need to ground myself and stuff, but what do I ask when I get there!! Why are they calling to me?

Any advice would be good.
Many thanks

I bought some, but my "booklet" said that when reading them, you must think of what is happening in your life at the moment and they will relate to that. It seems to work, although I don't use them very often as like you I am not overly sure if I am doing it right.

Hope this helps, maybe you could try looking at them in that way, relating them to happenings in your life now and in the near future?

Let me give you a little advice... take the book that you got with them, or any other book you were given on using the tarot and fling it out the window!

NOW we can make a start.

There are two ways of using the cards.

1. Read the book. Follow its spreads. Learn by rote what each card signifies. Bore yourself to death.

2. Get to learn the cards.. learn how to USE them.

My advice is to do what the cards are asking you to do. Dont worry too much at the moment about asking the right questions, what to do and what not to do, just get a feel for the set you have. Study each card, get used to their look, their feel, know every card. Studey the pictures on them. Sit on the floor and spread them out around you and just look at them, touch them, consider what feelings they evoke in you. At night if you are sitting watching the TV.. have them out in your paws and flick through them. Do this until the cards feel like yours.

Now you can start asking questions.

Best thing to do is get yourself comfortable. Relax and start asking questions, questions will come to you and dont worry if at the start they are silly ones like "should I eat out tonight?" *lol* cut and turn the cards, feel what the card is telling you. Eventually the questions will become more focused as will the answers.

Spreads will start to come to you too. Spreads are handy if you are reading for other people but not necessary!! This is a REALLY important lesson to learn. If al you do is set cards out in a row then fair enough. Look at it this way. Say someone comes to you and asks you.. will this man marry me? You need to consider what the question is ACTUALLY asking.. so you need to know

1. About the character of of the man (card one)
2. How he feels about her (card two)
3. Is he the marrying type (card three)
4. How does she feel about him (card four)
5. Would a wedding between them work (card five)

etc etc... appreciate too that question 5 may lead to a bunch of other questions too. Reading the cards is about knowing the right questions to ask. But a little sense will tell you what the right questions are.

If someone asks you how their year is going to go..

You could lay out 12 cards... one for each month and then 4 more cards, one for each season and then 1 card as an overview of the year.

As you get more adept with understanding the questions that need to be asked you'll slowly get into the swing of it. I use the Tarot a lot, its a very handy tool, accurate too if you take the time to get to know it.

Good luck!!

Many thanks Xalle and Gina I will take it all on board and start to get to know my cards - it isn't difficult as they are beautiful.

Very good advice there Xalle! I don't use my tarot anywhere near enough these days, I have the Lord of the rings deck ( I know not many people like the deck.. But there is a connection for me as LotR has been a big part of all my life. I don't take any notice of the meanings written on them because each card has a slightly different meaning for me than than the written.

I know some people look down on the "newer" ranges of cards, but its a tool.. I personally dont think it matters WHAT's on the cards its about making a connection. Whatever works is my motto!

Thanks Xalle. I don't use true tarot I use fortune cards (and have done for a couple of years) which are easier as there are less of them but I will use your theory on them and see what happens as the answers have beena little hazy recently. Do you keep them in a black silk bag or is that a myth? Willow x

I was told to keep them in a bag to keep your energies on them, but I guess it's about doing what you feel right with. Oh it might be different for fortune cards.. im not sure smile.gif

They say you should keep them wrapped in black silk, in a box, facing some direction or other, but actually, its about respecting your tools.

Mine are currently kept wrapped in a green and blue piece of silk and then wrapped again in a piece of black silk. The black silk is just a coincidence. Both pieces that they are wrapped in were given to me by someone I love and (not to get all wishy washey) love is probably the strongest, most positive emotion we have. Seems like a good thing to suround my cards in, which are precious to me.

I acutally used to know someone who kept hers wrapped in a piece of what used to be her comfort blanket from childhood.

The only thing I would say, is dont let other people play with your cards. If you are reading for someone, its fine to let them hold the cards, cut the deck etc etc.. but I personally dont hand them out to friends to have a shuffle through. I like to keep the energy on them mine as much as possible. After doing a reading for someone I usually give them a quick cleanse just to shake off any energy that isnt mine. It means you have a clean slate to start from again.

If you want to know how to cleanse them, I'll tell you what I do.

Naturally, you cant dunk em in salt water, unless you are planing on making a paper mache model. So you need something delecate. I use breath and a feather. Spread the cards out in front of you on a table. Focus on the cards, and gently blow on them using the feather like a little broom to gently brush over the top of them and brush away all the little cobwebs of someone elses energy!

Willow, I dont think it really matters what cards you use as a tool, the principal is pretty much the same.

I used mine for Poker. It confused my opponents and made it easier to clean out their wallets.
