Full Version: What Is A Woodwitch?
UK Pagan, The Valley > The Circle (all pagans together) > Pagan Paths
Moonrising
I came across the term "woodwitch" today, it didn't come up in a search here so I wondered if someone could tell me what it means? I think I know what a kitchenwitch and a hedgewitch (both versions) mean but haven't come across this one before smile.gif

Oh, sorry, 'W-itch'.

Dunno. New neo-pagan fad invented to make people ask 'what is it'? smile.gif

Best wishes,

this appears to be related to robin hood - the son of Herne, and the woods of Sherwood.

Thanks smile.gif and now I know why the term seemed vaguely familiar, I came across that website ages ago when I was first investigating paganism. Although now I've forgotten where I heard the term yesterday.... maybe I should just go and get some sleep laugh.gif

That doesn't sound like its for me - they don't like to take on new understanding from other traditions. not keen on the word 'corrupt' here. an exploration combined with good ole commen sensee will detect most dodgey things.

Another off shoot? Now I have an enduring, and rather disturbing notion of "bush" witches cavorting through my head - ooer! o_eek.gif

A wood witch is one perfect for keeping you warm ... when you chuck 'em on a fire to burn of an evening biggrin.gif

Honestly that site listing "Sea or Water Witch, or a Hedgewitch and a Kitchenwitch. (To name just a few.) There are Celtic tradition Witches, Saxon Witches"

Generally I would take the name to mean a witch of the woods, one who feels most comfortable or connected there. But a witch shouldn't be defined from any one area since a witchs entire life should be effective all over. A kitchen witch is happiest in her kitchen brewing and making food stuffs, a garden witch happiest in her garden, a water witch happiest when drowning ... biggrin.gif o_rofl.gif Sorry, it's just too much all the 'I don't think I fit because I can't be arsed to research properly so I'll make up what I think I am' witches. Witch pure and simple whatever you're happiest doing. Otherwise we'd have sex witches, no hang on, that's been done too biggrin.gif

Well you would, wouldn't you, filthy heifer.

back to the topic at hand...

I guess it does exactly what it says on the tin, witches who are happiest working in forests and have a particular interest in tree lore.

Still, woulda been handy back in the days of the inquisition. You coulda used 'em as kindling for the real witches, save on fire lighters wink.gif

I'm amazed no up and coming occultist (coff) with an eye to making a fast buck or three, hasn't just cut the cackle and set up yet another brand of "genuine" Witchcraft --> "New Age Pseudo Witchcraft"!
They could even cover all their options and aim it at the xians! o_rofl.gif

Do you get shrubbery witches that live in town centres? laugh.gif

Seriously I like the term wood witch and hedge witch. Labels are fine as long as you get to chose your own.

Witches with the Ancient Wissdom can often be found in the Wissling Woods of Wiss, where they worship the sacred bush. Amongst other things. rolleyes.gif

Heinz 57 eh? dry.gif

Well you can keep your wood, hedge and water witchery because it can't hold a candle to the etherial powers of living in the pampas (without a terrific explosion)! laugh.gif

It's been done in North America and called the "Universalist Church". o_bolt.gif
