It didn't even mention Sitala, another goddess of Smallpox. I found this deity in Rudyard Kipling's story "The Bridge-Builders". There are a lot of Gods and Goddesses in that tale.
QUOTE("Editor Constantine Phipps")
Sitala ..can inflict the disease or take it away. She is usually portrayed riding on an ass, naked, and painted red. Victims of smallpox were often left uncremated so as not to injure the goddess who had taken possession of the body.

It's interesting the respect for the ravaged body. I remember reading somewhere that certain forms of cancer, especially visible facial tumours, were considered to be blessings from the gods in ancient Egypt and to die of them was an honour. The Christian god also inflicted plagues in the old testament and gave St. Etheldreader throat cancer. She was re-names St. Audry, from whence the word 'tawdry' comes from, because she wore a necklace, which she blamed for attracting the displeasure of god.

One wonders about the sort of offerings they prefer - a plate of fresh scabs, and a goblet of pus maybe?

I think all gods can cure diseases to some extent. Bawon was famed in Maya Deren's book for jizzing over sick people and pretty much bringing them back from the dead. The main got of healing resembled a tree with one leg and one eye. I think what I find fascinating is that the god creates disease but is still respected without hatred. But yes, they giveth and they taketh away.

What about Papa Nurgle?
Surely he's entered enough people's consciousnesseses to have taken on a sort of existence, in a Small Gods-kind of a way?

Hey...why not? Some folks seem intent on reawakening some of the more nastier deities out there.....
Because you know...someone born in our modern culture that's so far removed from the actual culture these deities came from would just have so much more understanding about these deities than the people back then....yeah, they were just 'misunderstood'

Elswyth I wouldn't say that they were misunderstood, perhaps those or at least some of those who are reawakening the "nastier gods" are doing so with view that the gods that we may regard as the nastier gods have as much of a role to play as those we may regard as the nicer gods, in my opinion all of the gods have the ability to be both.
