Dear All,

I am very interested in Celtic Tribes and Bronze Age Pre-Roman Britain.

There have been several programmes on the History Channel this last week and although Roman, Celtic Irish, Welsh, Gaulish Gods were lightly touched on I wonder if anyone can point me in the direction of our British Pagan Gods?

Not that I am denigrating any Deities from the above mentioned pantheons, but surely there must be indigenous Gods or Goddesses which compare to the Dagda, Morrigan, Cernnunos etc...

Apart from Sulis at Bath I am rather in the dark but I am sure that there is someone out there who probably is probably on nodding acquaintance with some of them smile.gif

Who is the overall Earth Mother, Sun God etc...

Looking forward to your replies...

You won't find an answer about the Bronze Age, because no one knows. The earliest literature (Welsh & Irish) comes from the Iron Age, which was cut short in mainland Britain by the Roman invasion. The main source for the pre-Roman gods of what we call England is from the Romans, who had a tendency to absorb local gods and identify them with their own, usually appending their name to that of a 'Roman' god.

There is stuff out there, but its generally very fragmentary and you have to look hard for it.

Indeed. There is also the added difficulty in working out which inscriptions belong to a genuine native tradition and which might belong to the Roman troops - many of whom in Britain where Germanic and set up their own altars and statues to their gods. Also the Roman gods, Mercurius etc., seemed to be pretty much interchangable in different areas of the country so you might have Mercury Thingus in one area but down the road you would have Jupiter Thingus (for example).

Romano-British evidence can be a useful starting point-also consider place name evidence.

Definitely worth seeing what your local history/archaeological society have found too-a good option of you want to concentrate on the local area. I found out loads of stuff this way and have as reasonable an overview as you can expect for my local area. It has helped clarify some UPG experiences as well. smile.gif
