I've not ever really considered using magic mainly because it all seems a bit too scary to dabble in without any guidance.
Anyway, I have reason to be a little worried that someone may try and send some nasties my way and was wondering if there was much I could do to protect myself / kids / OH / home.
I've read some of the other threads asking similar, but my knowledge is, well, pretty much non-existent, so wouldn't know the first thing about incantations etc. I'm missing the first basic steps I guess.
Sorry, this must sound so ignorant but any chance of an idiot's guide?

Firstly, I'd be asking myself why this person might be ill wishing you, and whether or not there could be a more mundane method of dealing with the situation.
That said, I suggest an equal armed cross of rowan twigs, bound with red wool/thread above your door or bed etc. Can use more than one BTW. Always ask the tree before taking her wood, and thank her. Some milk is also a nice offering.
Another one is to hang a bunch of dill over the front door. A lot really depends on what is actually being sent, by whom, and why. A positive and fearless attitude will do far more to protect you though!

Thanks Tas. This person is a bully who I really want to stand up to! 3 years of backing down and being walked over and I'm finally in a position where I can say "you've taken the piss too long, I'm not putting up with it any more".
She has never said it was intentional, but she told me of someone who did her a great wrong who then lost their house in a fire soon after. She gets in an absolute rage and bad things happen was the implication. Of course, it could be coincidence or she could just be talking crap (I have no way of verifying), but as it's not just me I have to consider, I'd like to have my bases covered if possible!

IMO? Honestly? She's full of the brown stuff.
No REAL Witch would need to make such daft boasts. I reckon she will get what she deserves sooner, rather than later. Remember - such cowards feed off others' fear.
Smile sweetly (or not) and walk away from her.

I am with Tas on this. She's full of crap.
If you want to protect your home Tas's is a good suggestion. Or you could try something like a windchime and stick little pieces of mirror on it. It'll reflect anything coming to the home. Dont buy a mirror windchime. Buy a wind chime and stick little reflective bits to it and as you stick, concentrate on things (anthing) bouncing off the shiney stuff!
Also... to protect your family, if you really feel its needed... Make a stew, pick your favourite herb and get it fresh. Chop it up and put it into stew, casserole or soup... as you chop and prepare it put thing about how you love your family adn want to protect them. Focus your positve feelings and love in the prep and then put it in and stir it up, imagine each member of your family eating it and getting that "ready brek" glow. Should be more than enough.
The get a large wet haddock and smack yer wumman with it. not magickal.. just satisfying.

Thanks again - some great things to try.
Now where's the best place to get not too fresh haddock?

I agree with all that Xale has added - with the exception of the large haddock. I prefer a housebrick meself!

Or marinate a housebrick in Eau de manky Haddock.....even better !
Where to get a none too fresh haddock, most supermarkets I would say, considering their dirty tricks with labelling etc.....

I would use a witchs bottle, and do a house cleansing ritual..
I use the 4 elements, salt for earth, candle for fire, water.. for water
and a bell for air!.. Make sure to get salt, in all the wee corners and closets.. and doorways, etc. So go around the house, 4 times, w/ just one item, ie like salt..
Also you want to get rid, of ALL the stuff you have of the other persons..
Then just get them out of your life, when you start thinking about them,
picture an eraser board in your mind and erase them..
Also, if you're new, do you know now to put a circle/ orb of light around yourself, family, house, etc? Use white or yellow..
Thats really impt and start reading..reading and reading (see pm)
When I first started out, learning about magick, i was psychically attacked..
I was sooo ill.... luckily, the chat room, i was at , other witches..
knew/ understood what was going on. One of my friends, in the chat, had me come to her house, meet her and stay w/ her for 3 days, while she taught me very valuable things, I've never forgotten....She was wonderful!!
The person, who was doing this and i knew who, had sent me a picture, pretending to be a friend..... and thats when I learned that when you start learning
how to really do magick, its soo impt to learn how to protect yourself!
(my cats were even acting extremely weird and upset..arghh)..
So good for you, for asking... these things, do exisit.. but as the others said,
.. don't let fear rule you either..
ohh also a dreamcatcher, above your bed..
hope this helps

I find a positive mental attitude helps tremendously. I often use a meditation chant as a sort of spell. I got it from one of the Farrars' books (!)

I did a turn for a few years as the Pagan Fed's "Auntie PF" answering enquires of this sort - mainly about who could the person contact to get rid of an ill-wishing. My usual response was as others have said, to try mundane solutions first. And, again echoing others, the first mundane solution (and the first magical one, as well) is to adopt an attitude not to let the b*st*rds grind you down.
Yes, there are other solutions out there. Some have been posted elsewhere in this forum. If you look around the other threads in this room you'll find other answers. However, I think you're absolutely right - if you're not used to handling magic, take it very, very carefully and only do (1) what you feel comfortable with and (2) what you understand.
This forum is somewhere where everyone can ask questions and share; that what it's for: sharing. But that doesn't mean that the answers given are suitable for everyone on the forum. We're all different. The members who practise magic use very different forms of magic, at different levels. My own preferred type is protection magic, but that doesn't mean I'd offer the same solution to every problem; it has to be tailored to the individual's needs and ability.

definitely full of brown stuff, too much superstition, too much need to appear powerful, and under it all a strong sense of fear and powerlessness coming from this person. such a person won't be capable of doing much except pass on her own fears to others. just a mind trick.

Whilst I myself do not practice magic (I once tried something vaguely magicy to try and see what all the fuss was about and had spontaneous nosebleeds for a few days after - I have put this down to coincidence and not anything magical) I do have something of an interest in the ‘magical’ and its associated history, beliefs, superstitions, folklore and practices so I may be able to come up with something.
As has already been suggested explore your more mundane options first, the way I think of it is: rational solutions for rational problems, irrational solutions for irrational problems. If you are worried about using magic or feel to inexperienced then don’t as you run the risk of making the problem worse or creating another problem altogether. Personally I suggest to avoid trying “active magic” i.e. spells, invocations etc. and try a more passive approach that does not require the extension will (in a mystical sense), the exertion of your own ‘magic energies’ or ‘ opening the psych’ (also in a mystical sense), it is probably unwise to experiment with opening certain doors when you believe you are under magical attack.
It is an ancient belief that many things such as books and scrolls, statues and tablets, plants and animal remnant, and words and symbols have innate ‘magical’ properties and that simply having them in your home or about your person can have a powerful effect; I would try using ‘innate magic’ of such things to protect yourself and your home.
According folklore/superstition the doors that are open to the outside, the windows and the hearth are the most vulnerable points on your home against magic/the supernatural.
Silver is impervious to magic. Try wearing some silver jewellery or including (cheap) silver jewellery in the mirror wind-chime that Xalle suggested.
The cross, the pentacle/pentagram and (I think) the eye and the hexagram are protective symbols. You could try inscribing/drawing one or more of these symbols on your doors and windows (I personally would use only one symbol, probably the pentagram or the eye just for aesthetic reasons)
There are many trees and plants that offer protection against magic and malevolent spirits. Some are: rowan, sage, vervain, rue, juniper, elder, birch and garlic. You should to ask someone more knowledgeable than I as to what exactly the magical properties/folklore behind each plant is how they should be used, I would think, generally, that they could be worn about the person (pinned on clothing or in a pouch), burned as incense (if not toxic), hung about the house (over doors, windows or beds) or used in the construction of a protective object such as the rowan cross as suggested by Tas or the mirror wind-chime.
I think black candles supposedly ‘absorb negative energy’ as so do black crystals, although I know very little about the use of crystals as I consider the purchase of most crystals (i.e. the ones blasted out of the ground a shipped around the world) to be unethical.
I hope this is of some use.

Wise words I think. If you let your fear or apprehension take you over, something unpleasant is likely to come of this situation, regardless of whether she intends (or is able) to do you harm.
I'm sure I speak for many here who are hoping that everything turns out well for you, you should draw on that intent if it helps.

The innate type solutions sound like they're not a bad thing to do regardless of whether there's any real need?

Just as a general thing (because I also think this bint is full of crap), get somes Witches' bottles going. Get some little bottles, fill them with glass, nails, anything sharp you can think of. They represent the bane that may come your way. While you do this, make it your will and visualise any bane that comes your way being attracted into the bottle. Visualise any bane coming your way in the future doing the same.
Drink lots of water.
Wait for your body to produce some wee wee and then fill them up.
Urine is considered a curse destroyer in a lot of cultures. It is the same as showing a fearless attitude. You are symbolically putting it all below you and quite literally saying 'I piss on you' by this action.
Then seal and bury the bottles around your property (one in every direction if you can). Don't mark their locations out because you don't want folks getting ideas if they have big enough brains to get ideas.
Another thing I have found effective is making rune stakes and burying them. If you want any more info on that, drop me a PM.
Mirrors are also old rebounders. Usually folks have them facing the doors so that anything sent in, gets sent back out.
If you have a chimney that you don't use, it used to be quite common to put a shoe in it. Not sure about any fire risk if you do use it. Shoes were considered 'spirit traps' and were placed with the intent of stopping evil from getting in to the house.
I liked Xalle's idea of feeding your family something that works on the inside - a nourishing meal made with love.
Rowan crosses tied with the red thread are also good.
But most importantly, don't be afraid. If you are afraid, you give up your power. Get angry with them but don't get scared!.

Just wondered if the reflective wind chimes, rowan cross etc are the sorts of things people might put about their homes as a 'just in case ...' measure - even if there's no reason to believe anyone might be meaning you harm.
Thanks for the witches bottle info Elswyth.

I think yes (you don’t wait until your having a car accident to put your seatbelt on) and I personally would incorporate them into the décor of the home. Also I think it important that such things are aesthetically pleasing to you.

I have a mate who actually, when doing reconstruction of their home, build the wards into the walls.
Magical wallpaper paste anyone? Protective symbols under the wallpaper? Spells hidden in the cavity wall ?
Bloody good ideas if you ask me!

Thats what I did when I redecorated by new flat. I took some pics of the flat on out 2nd viewing to show my mum, and when I looked at one of the photos closer, I saw something reflected in the mirror I didn't like. I can't really describe it - but it gave me the willies (when I figure out how to pos.. i'll pop it in the appropriate thread for all to have a peek)... and so.. after cleansing the flat, I painted pentagrams on all the walls. I felt much better after that.. and have had no eerie feelings since.
sweetleaf - i protect home (as above.. although that may not be practical for you!) and I also have a mirror on the door, a salt line and a salt pentagram under to door mat

All other suggestions made are top notch advice to.. especially about not letting her get to you
