Does anyone out there have a travelling altar they use for holidays etc? If so, what have you done, I'm looking for something relatively simple as my home altar is sufficient for everything else

Many thanks

can't say I have, I never use an altar, but maybe just a nice simple wooden box, you could carve with your own symbols/design, and keep any objects you needed inside when you were not using it?

Thats a nice idea, thank you

Or if you wanted something less bulky, you could make a little bag up to keep everything in that would double up as your altarcloth. Bang! instant flat packed altar. cool.gif

Since you feel the need for an altar then why not use the ground where you'll be staying or a tree stump or something? A mantlepiece is a good focus point too. Maybe create yourself an altar cloth and take that with you but Esk's idea to make it into an altar cloth that doubles up as a bag is great smile.gif

Discovering the energies in a new place is part of the experience smile.gif

I move around a lot and have no permanent altar. The bits and bobs I do have are carried in a small leather pouch and set up when needed.

I have created a mini travelling "witch kit" for the very reason that many of my holidays always end up coinciding with some pagan calander event, beit lunar or solar. My kit consists of a wash bag and small tin box.

In the tin:

lengths of narrow gold and silver ribbon (sun & moon energies)
black glass pebble with a spiral etched into it (spirit)
mini incense sticks and burner (ylang ylang & cinnamon)
silver florin (1933) (wealth & prosperity)
short lead pencil ('wand' & east/air)
tiny fimo goddess figure
black pebble (earth)
sea shell (water/health)
mini key fob swiss army knife (fire)

In the wash bag:

white napkin (altar cloth)
small pack of coloured pencils & mini notebook for sketching and writing spells etc.
mini travel shampoo bottle (to carry mineral water or other liquids)
blue egg cup (water & ritual 'cup')
small blue bag containing green fimo runes
small box of matches covered in red glitter (fire)
3 stackable mini pots containing sea salt, crystal 'seeds', and 1 tea light

I got the idea from reading "Ariadne's Thread" and "Every Woman a Witch". I'll take a photo and post it in my gallery for you to see.

I don't have an altar at home so I don't think I'd need one when away either, but the idea of a travelling 'witch kit' sounds ideal for your purposes. What a great idea...

practical pagans, all of you

A Travelling 'Witch kit' / Travelling Altar is a wonderful idea. I did not realise till I read this but I have been making one since March 2004 with out thinking about what I was doing.
Talk about the light bulb going on biggrin.gif

I use a travelling contact lens kit from Debenhams. It's a metal tin - about the size of a baccy tin - with little bottles and contact lens case. Perfect for keeping water and salt in. I also keep a couple of birthday cake candles and a small feather in there. I smoke so I don't have to keep a lighter there, but I do have a small drawing of a single path labyrinth. I love it as a kit because it's so discreet, and small.

In a book I was reading, I think it was A Witch Alone, the author suggests gathering the bits and pieces needed on site. It's quite a nice idea, but not very practical if you're in a hotel room!

Oh these ideas are great, I love the travelling witch kit, and the contact lense case is ingenious
