Full Version: How Old Is The Long Man Of Wilmington?
UK Pagan, The Valley > The Circle (all pagans together) > General Paganism

I know this article is from last year but i just wondered if any-one agrees or not.
Theres been controversie about the dates of this hill figue and the Cerne Abbas Giant.
As far as i can tell no dating has been obtained from these figues.Only the surroundings looked at and dated.
The Uffington Horse was first cut in the Bronze age.Surely the same dating technique could be used on the other two to find out the exact dates.
I sometimes get the feeling that people are afraid to accept that something like this could last so long which would mean continuety,as in the local people keeping the figues clean.
This is what must have happened at Uffington.
Perhaps they are afraid to date them. wink.gif

Hill figures are extremely difficult to date, they often no longer resemble little of what they used to as they are changed much over the years. Some are changed by having bits added, some had bits removed, some became grassed over and others have been damaged by repair which change the pattern subtley over the years. Many hill figures are lost for ever, nothing remains, some claim extensive figures hidden in certain areas with the use of very dodgy equipement to reproduce so called hidden figures. Ways of dating often rely on what is found underneath something, not the drawing itself. Therefore if nothing is found to date it to that older period then it isn't. The areas covered are huge, artifacts if dropped would be found. Not explained well but never well laugh.gif

I found this about the Uffington horse.I was trying to remember how they dated it.Its in the article.Just wondered if the same technique coulsd be applied to the others.
I suppose the other problem is money. If its a expensive procedue ,archaeological groups might not want to spend the money.

Very interesting in light of the fact that the Cerne Abbas Giant in particular has often been interpreted as an image of Hercules therefore dating it back at least as far as the Roman occupation of Britain.

A bit more digging required on my my part I think.

Thanks Morrigan.

I've always thought the Cerne Abbas giant looked a bit like the pictorial representation of the constellation Orion - but that's just me and my odd perceptions, I think!

Fascinating stuff, though - thanks Morrigan!

I remember some TV archaelogy programme earlier in the year focussing on this and using some very modern and accurate dating method involving soil samples and they stated that the Long Man wasnt any earlier than the 1600's sad.gif I'm disappointed in that, as I always wanted it to tie in with the barrow at the top which is considerably older smile.gif O well, dream on. I think they dated Cerne Abbas man too and he wasnt as early as they previously thought.

Edit : ye gods Im such a thick so and so. Next time I should click the links before opening me gob eh ? lol.
