Couldn't agree more - an excellent site - remember to use the filters so the maps don't get overwhelmed with too many sites to list

Bear in mind though, as an interactive database with info provided by amateurs, that not all sites are identified correctly.

Don't forget to check for henges separately from stone circles or standing stones etc.

I remember Willy Howe near Brid - and Rudston, in N.Yorks, plus 2 or 3 stone circles on the N Yorks Moors.

Depends on what you mean by 'learn from' too smile.gif There are the truly fabulous from the air Thornborough Henges, (under quarry risk still) that can only be viewed from the road and are as important in our heritage as Stonehenge, but visually not as effective from the ground since the land is private but two are very close to the road. They are between Ripon and Masham. There's the Devils Arrows at Boroughbridge, lots of cairns, but if you want a fascinating place that's not prehistoric then try the Druids Temple at Masham. Built in about the 18th century and made to look like a stone circle, complete with altar, cave like area behind it with great luminous green moss D: it's used annoyingly by people today who think nothing of lighting campfires there dry.gif That's a great place.

Then there's Sutton Bank where the iron age encampment was, there's no sign of it now to the normal eye but the views are dramatic and you get a real idea of why they built it there. Plus below that is the Kilburn White Horse, created in 18something based on chalk hill figures and occasionally turned into a stallion or zebra rolleyes.gif o_lol.gif All these are North Yorkshire, there are plenty more smile.gif

Where to start ? To add to Weatherwitch's excellent selection and extend a little west in places:

There are lots of Bridestones that are interesting in themselves and in spectacular countryside. The most famous are in Dalby Forest (SE873915) and there are others at Tripsdale (SE575979) and on Bridestones Moor near Hebden Bridge (SD930271) and yet more on Sleights Moor near Whitby (NZ850046 and NZ846048).

If you are visiting the Devil's Arrows Isurium Brigantum at Aldborough (SE406664) is worth a visit as a centre of the Brigantes.

One of my favourite spots is the Turf Labyrinth (SE638713) between Dalby and Terrington. It's age is disputed but it is set on the Howardian Hills with stunning views and is well worth a meditative walk.

Almscliffe Crag (SE268490) has several cup marks and a Wart Well. There are lots of Holy Wells too including Ebbing and Flowing Well near Settle (SD805653) - Lady Well at Threshfield (SD998638) - Margaret Well at Barden Bridge (SE054580) and the Wine Wife Well at Sawley (SE232674).

Well that is a start.
