UK Pagan, The Valley > The Circle (all pagans together) > General Paganism
Whisperedwind

Hi all!

Just wondering if anyone had any preference , to their favorite witches daybook?

I like Marie Bruces Witches Almanac, but I also like Lleweldyns ~Witches Daybook.

I'm from the states, do don't know if it differs much over there! smile.gif

the always curious!

I got given a llewelyn Datebook for xmas, not my thing really. I'm probably biased though, i'm allergic to almost anything from that publishing house. Desperately seeking a couple of Discworld things though, Diary and Calendar. I'm too cheap to pay £13 for a calendar though so I'm hoping I'll get them on sale somewhere....

Dead good, all the pagan holidays and new and full moons marked plus all other events you can shake a stick at and the Discworld events too, like Soul Cake Day and Hogswatch laugh.gif

I've been looking at almnacs but put a little because most seem to be usa based and wouldn't be applicable here in the UK, although i assume the datebook is revamped for the UK market?

I do like the sound of the pratchett one tho, I'll keep an eye out for that, thanks esk!

The Elfin diary is quite useful smile.gif

For the last three years I have been given an Elfin Diary at Yule and found it very useful. I like the new smaller size this year too.

I got the Llewellyn one just for a change this year - thought it was all right, maybe a bit (okay, very) fluffy, but tolerable, until I had a good flick through and came across the entry for whatever date it is: Alyson Hannigan - Willow from Buffy's birthday...

Dear oh dear oh dear...

I just buy a really cheap hardback diary and fill in all my own special dates biggrin.gif

I've yet to find a decent pagan diary that is a large size with a page-a-day - something that's essential for me, as I'm using it to make bookings etc.

I use the Elfin diary. I did look at the Llewelyn datebooks a few years back, but they were too American and therefore not much use. I'm too lazy to do conversions to find out what time the full moon is gonna be tongue.gif

I've been given a couple of the Llewelyn almanacs before, which I tend to ignore the actual date stuff and read the articles. Last year's herbal almanac had quite a lot of interesting stuff in it.

Got bought one of the Llewelyn ones a couple of years back, but didn't think much of it to keep buying; got one of those Elfin ones in 2001 I think which I thought was pretty cool, but generally I don't tend to buy the datebooks; though I do, like Fuzi, buy Llewelyn's almanacs every year for the mix of articles.

Oh dear! Me and diaries/calendars...

I have my PC calendar, a Palm calendar (pocket-sized and very useful for when out and about making appointments), wall calendar (this year by Brush Dance), and We'Moon (the most witchy being that it has the most detail with regard to Sun, Moon and planetary cycles, and one which I use for reference).

I used to have a Franklin Covey time management organiser which, while I worked I faithfully took everywhere, though as it was rather clumpy (approx. A5 sized) was sometimes a pain to carry around. I have also used mini-sized Filofaxes in the past.

As far as wall calendars go I have always tried to choose something alternative to the kittens and ponies type found in many retailers, and still have old Tolkien calendars along with other fantasy and myth ones. The one and only true witchy calendar I ever bought was Llwellyn's calendar from 1999, which I still have and which, being just the 2nd year they ran it, was still relatively un-fluffy, though I wouldn't touch the recent incarnations with a barge-pole now (BTVS Willow's birthday indeed!!!).

My problem has always been that I have found it hard to find just one calendar/date book that serves all purposes - small enough to be carried around in a handbag, detailed enough to include Sun and Moon cycles and significant pagan dates (without having to refer to other calendars/datebooks to do so) along with regular mundane appointments, and yet visible enough to see what you're doing for the week/month at a glance.

Yes, me and calendars/datebooks... oh dear, oh dear... rolleyes.gif

I didn't know that about the Discworld ones.

might have to get one, as I love the Discworld artwork.

I received a copy of the Almanack along with a copy of 'Going Postal'.

While the book is excellent (as usual), I can't say the same about the almanack. Whilst some parts are funny, alot of it is not up to TP's usual standard, and my general impression was that it was thrown together to extract a few more quid out of Discworld fans. I recommend you have a look at it before buying.

I've got the Discworld Almanack and I personally love it!

The content of the diaries is often written largely by Stephen Briggs, haven't checked the credits on this years. I don't mind, I don't want it so much for the comedy I buy the books for that.
Whisperedwind
Noooooooooo, really say it isn't true, that the llewendyns has buffys bd date in it?
EEEEEEEEeeK and Ack!!! lol

I've never heard of elffin or discworld diarys, so will check them out, thanks guys!

I have the Moonwise diary and calender, one copy at work and another at home.

Very useful as it lists the dates and festivals of more religions than you can shake a stick at.

Plus it has some nice poetry and piccies by people other than me.

the Elfin one has a very good reputation.

I like the bit in the Almanack where it says about talking to bees about the goings on in the house.

otherwise they come in to find out for themselves.

i got the elfin diary this year and is the best i've found so far smile.gif

Ooh we had a bee visit yesterday, which was weird!

I have the Llewellyn's "Witches' Spell A Day Almanac" and "Gwydion McPagan's" Moon Dairy - UK times. This is my first year without the other Llewellyn book, I've had it for the past 3/4 years, it's got some good bits in it.

I'm still looking to get an Elfin Diary for this year, I like my date books!

Oh I also have a wall calender (poster) which gives you ecological information and shows you what stars you can see etc, which is fab!

My son gave me a Moon Diary for Yule that he found on ebay. Since seen it a shop in London. Hand written with lovely illistrations and includes moon dates and times as well as void-of-course times, info on various deities and rituals.
Back page claims it is available from The Magic Temple Ltd or www.themagictemple.co.uk although not actually seen the site myself.

I've used the Elfin Diary for the last couple of years and used the Moonwise Diary before that, both very good.

Blessed be

or witches diary, which although very fluffy it has a lot of info and can actually be used as a diary the elfin is more of an almanac.
Alsh the dutch one is great for getting out inpublic as most people don't understand dutch !!!

I just got the Elfin! Yea it's fab and I don't mind squiffy happy.gif it's a good read with lots of useful information.

I use a normal WHSmith student year diary (runs September through to August) as I normally change jobs in the summer - new job, new diary. It has all the full moons marked in, and the start and end of British Summer Time. That's pretty much all the information I need. Any witchy stuff I need I get from the hobs green calendar www.hobsgreen.com.
love-lies-bleeding
The Elfin one is lovely, with personal attention from the maker in emails, and a bit squ-whiff from the last-minute printing matters not a jot! It's a nice and unpretentious one packed with stuff.
