How far away.

The yearning heart can pierce the veil of time.

The eye can see and trace that long desire

That hearkens to a home, a time, a place

Long gone.

Was I once there?

Once bathed in clearest light of fragrant dawn

Amongst the olive groves and lemon trees?

Breathing air that carried quickening scents

Of herbs?

Did I walk there?

Feeling the heat of sunshine on the slopes

Of rugged hillsides, towering over cliffs,

And hearing insect voices rise and fall

’Midst pines?

Was my life peace?

Or did I hear, in that far day, the clash

Of razor'd tip against the brazen shield,

As man stood next to man, a deadly wall

Of spears?

Today, as then,

Clear waters wash the shelving sands, so white,

Of islands, once the shrines of ancient Gods.

Still, now, the mountains raise their forest heads

In pride.

And in this day

I close my eyes to watch the glistening sea,

And feel the breeze, and smell the flowering thyme,

And stand in prayer, by temples and in groves

Of home.

I have felt that. This year, one sunset, in Scotland. I was on another shore, in a different climate. Yes.

Interesting. This seems to have resonated. I wonder if a sense of ancient belonging (for want of a better term) is something that is relatively common in pagan circles. May be worth another thread. I'll have to think about that one.
