Pendulum Dowsing

Dowsing with a Pendulum.

This my take on this great subject based on my experiences :)

I have been dowsing with a pendulum for years, I first found I could dowse with a pendulum by accident and it gave me one heck of a surprise at the time as I just happened to be holding it over my knee to look at it in the sunlight, when it started to swing in a circular motion :o And the rest, as they say, is history :D

Uses for Dowsing

I realise that people use their pendulums for dowsing in different ways and for a huge different numbers of reasons. Pendulums can be used for all sorts of things from health matters to seeking water and oil. Some of the American users are very rich from this :D You can use it to divine the future or find somewhere or something on a map. I use the pendulum for all sorts from finding lost stuff, to balancing the energy patterns in the house by using a plan of the house (much faster than walking round a room with a pendulum), I use it to check for allergies, for divination and to have a laugh with when it winds me up :D You talk to it, it responds. Interestingly enough the more you use it, the more it is possible to get results without ever voicing out loud your question! The only trouble with that is when you start thinking ahead to formating the next question and it's already starting to answer it for you :) The uses for a pendulum are endless.

My main use for my pendulum is as a divination tool for scrying, the results from this have been extremely accurate up to two years ahead. I love working with a pendulum, it sounds daft to say that you can have 'conversations' with one but you can and they can be stubborn buggers too :)

What to dowse with

I can dowse with anything that is metal, glass, crystal or stone. I can dowse with wood but the results (ie. the swings) are fairly weak in comparison to metal or glass etc. I cannot however dowse with a plastic yet others can. You need no special pendulum, a favoured necklace and pendant will work just as well as a hated one will :D You could dowse with a paperclip or by placing an object in a bag and holding the corner, just as long as the pendulum is able to swing freely without restraint. You need no special cord or chain, a 22 carat gold chain will work just as well as a bootlace or strand of hair, as long as the pendulum has room to move it will be alright. Some schools of thought talk of specific lengths of cord/string but this is not neccesary, not even for depth analysis. Simply ask the pendulum and work your way through stated depths rather than the complex system of swings depending on cord length to tell how far below the surface something is.

Personally I have never had any need or seen any need to consecrate a pendulum, I suppose someone might if they used it for magical work, but my pendulum is used for mundane purposes and not ritual.

Interpreting the Answers

Everyone will have answers specific to themselves, you can't be told which is 'yes' and which is 'no' by someone else. The system I work with has four responses, yes, no, stupid question and answer unknown/not yet available. For me - at the moment because it changes from time to time and depending on what I am dowsing for and with - a back and forth straight line swinging motion is yes, a circular swing is no. Answer unknown is stationary, not moving at all, and stupid question is random fast movement of a non specific direction. I prefer to have my pendulum still when starting to use it, but others prefer to have it swinging, it makes no difference. If I am dowsing on behalf of a male then nine times out of ten the yes/no responses will swap around. If I change pendulum then I check the responses again, just in case :D To find out what the responses are simply ask 'Am I male?' 'Am I female?' and since you will know which is correct ;) you will have your yes/no response. You can always ask it to verify a reply as well.

Practise makes perfect

You should practise to get used to working with a pendulum, to get to know it's responses and how it feels to use. Try and hide things under cups, a key, a sweet, a coin etc and get someone to switch the mugs around, see how accurate it is with practise. Try dowsing tinned food to check contents, try holding it over your body at various places and check it's readings against known problems. Then try it over your pet, be warned cats think it's a game and swipe at it  Try dowsing maps for landmarks and see how the pendulum draws you to the appropriate area.

But most of all have fun with it. You'll find that if you can dowse with a pendulum then you can use almost any object after that :D

Where the 'power' or ability comes from

I believe that the power or ability to make the pendulum move comes from within ourselves. Some people say that you are deliberately swinging the crystal, but what does it matter? What does that prove when it gives you answers to things you didn't know about?

I tend to think that the pendulum acts from the human mind, yet it tells and shows me things I couldn't possibly know. I feel it uses our energy to tell us the answers. My best divination with a pendulum was done about four years ago and predicted so many things, down to small details such as first letters and types of location that there was no way I could guessed this or influenced this.

It can also pick up on hidden underground water streams as well, something again the operator wouldn't know about so I feel that it must be able to tune into the earths energies.

Caution when using dowsing with a Pendulum

There can be problems with dowsing, not everyone can do it and not all of us can use the same materials, as I said I cannot dowse with plastic but others can! :( A beginner or over enthusiatic user can quickly burn themselves out with it. It should be advised that beginners with pendulums take it easy because where ever the movement and answers come from, it without doubt drains your own personal energy resources. You can get very tired, sleepy, and the pendulum either starts to give the 'idiot' response, gives odd answers or stops working altogether. This can happen after a short time sometimes for experienced users too.

The best authors on dowsing are difficult to find as most of their work is out of print, Tom Graves is my favourite dowsing author, his sense of humour ( a neccessity for any dowser  ) is great too :D I would like to get hold of T. Lethbridges dowsing books but they are even harder to find than Tom Graves are :(

Great post, WW :D

I've used a ring on a necklace most often (it's usually what I have to hand!) and I have a crystal on a short chain, but I rarely use that :D

Yes, excellent WW! I love my pendulum, it's amethyst and was a birthday gift. As soon as I tried it I was amazed by it, it's a cheeky sod though and often point blank refuses to move if it doesn't approve of what i'm asking! :D

I've been dowsing for years, a couple of years ago a friend bought me an amethyst pendulum for my birthday, up til then i was just using whatever came to hand!

I find it works best for finding things, either stuff I lost in the house, or looking for things on a map. I have used it to ask questions, but find it only gives me an accurate answer if i'm asking about someone else and have no vested interest in the answer - otherwise it just tells me what I want to hear!

Good stuff WW :o_lol:

I regularly check my pendulum's responses as well. Not only do they change if I change pendulums, but just occasionally they'll change from time to time with the same pendulum :o_embarrased: Luckily its only one of them that does that. Rather than asking it 'am I female' type questions, I simply ask 'show me yes', 'show me no' etc.

Ever tried hanging it in between two identical things like two pound coins? Then swapping one thing for something totally different? I nearly fell off my chair! That was what convinced me that it was real.

That's reminded me Starfire, it's very accurate for non-profit stuff but try and dowse for the lottery numbers ....... :o_embarrased: :o_lol:

Thanks for that WW - I was given my first pendulum by a friend of mine, when I first had it I was amazed, as I was always sceptical over it. Helgi still takes the mick out of me thinking i'm controlling it - but i'm not. I have to practice more with it - hadn't thought of using it for some of the suggestions you posted tho.

I've never had a talent with pendulums. They always hang perfectly still for me.

Never really got the hang of pendulums, mainly because I get overly concerned that I'm actually controlling it and what it's telling me is what I want to hear instead of the truth... really must learn to get over that :(

I have a pendant, i have used a stone on thronging, i have used a ring on a string. I even managed to commune with my spirit guide and find out (to my amazement) that the she, as I thought, was a he. I have atonunded freinds who were total disbelievers by proving they to could dowse.

My theory is that as a vibrating energy source I can tune into other vibrating enegy sources, of all natures. What thinks you ?

I think using the pendulum with charts is one of the most effective and fun ways of discovering information. Practice is needed of course, but you can make charts for almost any subject, so that you not only have a yes / no response but also a directional response. For example, you can make a map of the house or garden to locate lost objects etc.

I started a group which died a natural death - to see if we could search for an unknown perpetrator of a crime mentioned in TV's Crimewatch (making charts with Cockney / Scouse / Geordie / Welsh...hair colour size etc. We wern't succeful but with a lot of work and dedication a specialist group coud be. So I still think it is feasable - dreamer that I am :)

great tips though, i'll be sure to use some of them.

Just wondered if any present members of the site use pendulum dowsing and if so how do you find it? Is it useful in practical or spiritual ways or both? Any pitfalls or difficulties with pendulum dowsing that you have experienced? Is it an evolving practice?

I've dabbled with it but not recently.  Never taken it far enough to work out if there are any pitfalls. It's just a curiosity.

I would use an old house key tied to one end of a length of leather.

I've tried it once or twice, but not properly. I own 2, so perhaps I will try again in the future

Hi - I've used a pendulum in crystal therapy and always had excellent results but for personal use I find I that i can influence the pendulum if you want a certain result so best to try and not form an attachment to the outcome 😊

There are ways of holding out the pendulum, to get minimum or no personal interference. I was taught the method many years ago and it takes a while or practice before it becomes infallible!  I can't write how it is done - it needs to be demonstrated 🙂

Hi Maeve,

I too was taught a method probably about 8 or 9 years ago. I have rarely used it though a few years back I mentioned to some friends who have not practiced or witnessed anything like dowsing. I asked one to ask me questions that only he knew the answer to. To their surprise my dowsing with the pendulum gave correct answers.

Is there any specific kind of knowledge that you choose to use the pendulum for?

That's interesting to hear. I practise Druidism and the key aspect of the Druid mindset is that of being detached. It's one of those paradoxes that one tries to be as involved with one's Paganism as possible and yet at the same time try to be detached

What things do you use the pendulum for may I ask? 😄

Regarding being simultaneously detached and involved, I normally feel that there is no such thing as objectivity so, if I were being consistent, I would argue that you, the pendulum and the thing you're dowsing (the dowsee?) are all inseparable parts of the same system. Fortunately, consistency isn't a strong point with me. I'll therefore speculate that the purpose of dowsing is to learn something about the dowsee, not just to learn more about yourself or the overall system. I think that's how I'd resolve the detachment/involvement paradox - I'd think about what I was setting out to achieve and I'd be ok with an assumption that the dowser and the dowsee were potentially independent of each other.
